words per minute test

A words per minute test (WPM test) measures how many words you can type in one minute. The rule is simple: every five characters counts as one word, so longer words add more to your score. Take the test, type the text shown on screen, and your WPM, accuracy and error count are calculated live as you type.

What is a good WPM score?

An average computer user types about 40 WPM. Around 60 WPM is solid for most office and writing work. Above 80 WPM is fast, and professional typists, developers and data entry staff often type 90 to 120 WPM. If you are just starting, do not chase speed — aim for above 95 percent accuracy first and your speed will rise on its own.

WPM vs CPM

CPM means characters per minute. Some sites show CPM instead of WPM. Because one word equals five characters, you can convert easily: WPM = CPM / 5. This test shows you both numbers on the result panel so you can compare with any other typing test.

Typing test FAQ

What is a typing test?

A typing test measures how fast and accurately you type. You type a passage of text while the test counts your words per minute (WPM), accuracy and errors.

How is WPM calculated?

WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. The industry standard treats every 5 characters as one word, so longer words count more. Raw WPM ignores errors, while net WPM subtracts them.

How long should a typing test be?

1 minute is the most popular length and is enough for a quick check. Longer tests (3, 5 or 10 minutes) give a more stable result because they average out short bursts of speed and fatigue.

Is this typing test free?

Yes, completely free with no sign up, no account and no ads inside the typing area. Your past results are stored only in your own browser (localStorage), never on a server.

How do I type faster?

Practice daily for 10–15 minutes, prioritise accuracy over speed, keep your wrists relaxed and your fingers anchored on the home row (ASDF JKL;). Learn to use all ten fingers rather than hunting and pecking with two.
