How to Type Without Looking at the Keyboard

To type without looking, rest your fingers on the home row — left hand on ASDF, right hand on JKL; — feel the small bumps on F and J, and let each finger own its own keys. The skill is called touch typing, and it comes from short daily practice, not talent. Here is exactly how to build it, then test yourself below.

Start on the home row (ASDF JKL;)

Put your left index finger on F and your right index finger on J — both have a raised bump so you can find them without looking. Your other fingers fall onto A S D and K L ; . This is ‘home’: every key is reached from here and your fingers return here between keystrokes. Each finger is responsible for the keys directly above and below its home key.

Train muscle memory, not your eyes

The whole skill is not looking down. Keep your eyes on the screen, use the on-screen keyboard and hand guide below to see the next key, and resist peeking even when it feels slow at first. Practise 10–15 minutes a day and prioritise accuracy over speed — speed is just accurate muscle memory repeated. The touch typing test and the on-screen keyboard test highlight the next key and the correct finger as you go.

How long until you can touch type?

Most people stop needing to look within a few weeks of daily practice, and return to their old speed within one to two months — faster after that, because touch typing has no ceiling the way hunt-and-peck does. Check your progress against the average typing speed as you go.

Typing test FAQ

How do I type without looking at the keyboard?

Rest your fingers on the home row (ASDF for the left hand, JKL; for the right), find the bumps on F and J by feel, keep your eyes on the screen, and let each finger own its keys. Practise a little every day.

How long does it take to learn touch typing?

Most people stop looking within a few weeks of 10–15 minutes daily practice, and match their old speed within one to two months.

What are the home row keys?

A, S, D, F for the left hand and J, K, L, ; for the right. F and J have raised bumps so you can locate the home row without looking.

Why should I not look at the keyboard?

Looking down breaks your focus on the text and caps your speed. Typing by feel keeps your eyes on the screen and lets muscle memory take over, which is faster and more accurate.

Can I learn touch typing as an adult?

Yes. Touch typing is muscle memory, not talent or age — short, consistent daily practice works at any age.
